So maybe I should change the title. But in reality, at least in my mind's reality, there really is only one version of this song, and that's the one that Rick, Levon, Richard, Garth and Robbie get down on.

If you haven't seen it before, check out The Last Waltz. It's a "documentary" of The Band's last show ever, and it's directed by Martin Scorsese. The movie actually opens with this song, so you could really get away with watching the first 5 minutes. Or just YouTube it. That's what I do when I'm bored.

But if you're a music fan of any stretch of the imagination, rent the movie. I'll admit that I've never heard the Bee Gee's version of this song. I'm more familiar with the Wallflowers' version of it. I was watching Zoolander the other day, and at the beginning, right after he loses the award to Hansel (Hansel...so hot right now...Hansel), he's sitting in a puddle outside on the street and they start playing this fantastic Wallflowers song. Well...a couple googles (eugoogoly?) later, I now know that it's *gasp* originally done by the Bee Gees.

I started a joke, which started the whole world crying,
But I didn’t see that the joke was on me.

I started to cry, which started the whole world laughing,
Oh, if I’d only seen that the joke was on me.

I looked at the skies, running my hands over my eyes,
And I fell out of bed, hurting my head from things that I’d said.

Til I finally died, which started the whole world living,
Oh, if I’d only seen that the joke was on me.

I looked at the skies, running my hands over my eyes,
And I fell out of bed, hurting my head from things that I’d said.

’til I finally died, which started the whole world living,
Oh, if I’d only seen that the joke was one me."

Incubus - Southern Girl

Frankfort, KY...wish I was there right about now....

You're an exception to the rule
You're a bonafide rarity
You're all I ever wanted
Southern girl
Could you want me?

So come outside and walk with me
We'll try each other on to see if we fit
And with our roots, become a tree
To shade what we make, under it

Ben Folds - Not The Same

OK, Becky definitely gets the credit for making me think of a Ben Folds song. I think this is probably my favorite song of his. It's a true story about a guy that takes some acid at a party, then while he's tripping has some revelation and becomes a born-again Christian. If you've never heard it, or just don't listen to Ben Folds, I can guarantee you that this song is worth your time. One fun note about it...the first time I heard this song was on a friend's "Ben Folds Live" DVD. This song features a chorus in the background, kind of doing a 3 part "ah" deal (as if you have any idea what I'm talking about). Since he didn't have a chorus with him when they made the DVD, he had the audience split up and do it. Very cool :)

you took a trip
and climbed a tree
at Robert Sledge's party
and there you stayed
'til morning came
you were not the same after that

you gave your life
to Jesus Christ
and after all your friends went home
you came down,
you looked around
and you were not the same after that

Have a good weekend!

Jack Johnson - Gone

Do you ever feel like everything you own is just filler? They're comparable to Radiohead, right around the time they put out The Bends. In fact, here's a scenario. Right after The Bends, Thom Yorke says to the band, "listen chums (i don't know if he'd say chums or not, but just shut the hell up anyway), I've been thinking. We have 2 choices....we can either begin writing completely synthesized music, which will be at the same time impressive, contemplative, unsettling, and haunting, or we can dumb it down a bit and continue to rock." Well, it's obvious which way Radiohead would have/has went, but if they'd have went the other way, they'd probably be sounding a lot like Muse today. Check them out...you won't be disappointed.

Anyhow, Stockholm Syndrome (the title of today's track) refers to the bond that sometimes forms between a captive and his kidnappers. It got me to thinking about that time I was kidnapped back in '87...those were the days.

Eminem - The Way I Am

Em's probably my favorite rapper (Snoop's definitely the man, but Eminem is much more creative), and this is definitely my favorite track on any of his albums. I saw a show at the world-famous CBGB's. When I got to the City, the first thing I did was check what was going on over there while I was around. The best bet was something called the "Swedish Invasion Tour". I thought, "Hey, there's some good music in Sweden, I think. Let's check it out. (And let's hope that they aren't lumping Iceland in there. Fuck Bjork.)" So I showed up like an hour early and had to wait outside until nearly "showtime". Apparently, this show wasn't as big as I thought it was going to be. That's what the front door guys at CBGB's thought anyway.

It turns out, the whole thing was this group of 6 or 7 punk/pop/rock bands from Sweden. The first one was really bad, and I really thought about leaving. I'm glad I didn't. Some of the bands were really great...and some of them were good, but had really, really hot Swedish women singing for them. So that upgraded them to 'great'. One that I really liked a lot was called 'Whyte Seeds'. They played about 4 or 5 songs, all of which sounded great live. Their guitarist was excellent (I was right up front, so I could pay close attention to how he tore up the fretboard....he was really great). Their lead singer was this little funny looking guy with a distinct voice, which really worked with their punk sound. And God were they loud!

They weren't selling merchandise at the bar (or if they were, I couldn't tell...it turned out to be very crowded), so when I got back to Indiana I did some searching, and found their EP on a Swedish reseller site. I payed the 18-dollars-American for a disc I wasn't convinced would ever get to me, but eventually it did. I can't even say it's a great cd, but it certainly holds some memories of NYC and CBGB's! (By the way, I just went to their site to buy their new full length cd, but I think I'll hold off. After shipping, it'll be around $30.)

Hope everyone had a great holiday season...boy am I glad to be back at work!!

No right It ain’t right to fight
No right I’m hard like evil dynamite
No right It ain’t right to fight
But I fight anyway just to make you stay

No right It ain’t right to steal
No right I got no sex appeal
No right It ain’t right to steal
But I steal anyhow anytime I feel

Kanye West - Last Call

I ain't play the hand I was dealt, I changed my cards
I prayed to the skies and I changed my stars
I went to the malls and I balled too hard
'Oh my god, is that a Black Card?'
I turned around and replied, "Why yes but I prefer the term
African American Express"

Gotta have a little rap in this bitch :)

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!

Led Zeppelin - Fool In The Rain

This is by far my favorite Led Zeppelin song. It tells the story of a guy that's waiting for a girl on a street corner, and when she doesn't show, he starts to think things to himself. Then, he realizes he's on the wrong block :) If anyone hasn't heard it, and wants to, let me know. It's so good, I can't stand to leave someone out....I'll find a way to get that song to you.

Well there's a light in your eye that keeps shining
Like a star that can't wait for the night
I hate to think I've been blinded baby
Why can't I see you tonight?
And the warmth of your smile starts a-burnin'
And the thrill of your touch gives me fright
And I'm shaking so much, really yearning
Why don't you show up and make it all right?
...
Now I will stand in the rain on the corner
I'll watch the people go shuffling downtown
Another ten minutes no longer
And then I'm turning around
The clock on the wall's moving slower
My heart it sinks to the ground
And the storm that I thought would blow over
Clouds the light of the love that I found

Portishead - Cowboys

Did you sweep us far from your feet,
Reset in stone this stark belief,
Salted eyes and a sordid dye,
Too many years.

But don't despair,
This day will be their damnedest day,
Oh, if you take these things from me.

Did you feed us tales of deceit,
Conceal the tongues who need to speak?
Subtle lies and a soiled coin,
The truth is sold, the deal is done.

But don't despair,
This day will be their damnedest day,
Oh, if you take these things from me.

I could listen to Portishead all day....their vocalist (who's name I don't know) is wonderful. Sue me. I'm listening to this new disk that was made available to fan club members...it's a concert from 2004 in San Francisco. Carlos Santana comes out with them to do a really, really badass version of All Along the Watchtower. While that's great...I have to profess my gratitude for the man known as Butch Taylor. If I had to guess, I'd guess that most of you haven't listened to much of his work. He's got a knack for saying things in just the right way, so that it evokes the proper mental image/feeling. (Apparently I don't share in that knack, as that last sentence was a bear to grind out!) Check him out.

I don’t know just where I’m going
But I’m gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
’cause it makes me feel like I’m a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I’ll tell ya, things aren’t quite the same
When I’m rushing on my run
And I feel just like jesus’ son
And I guess that I just don’t know
And I guess that I just don’t know

I have made the big decision
I’m gonna try to nullify my life
’cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper’s neck
When I’m closing in on death
And you can’t help me not, you guys
And all you sweet girls with all your sweet silly talk
You can all go take a walk
And I guess that I just don’t know
And I guess that I just don’t know

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I’d sail the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailor’s suit and cap
Away from the big city
Where a man can not be free
Of all of the evils of this town
And of himself, and those around
Oh, and I guess that I just don’t know
Oh, and I guess that I just don’t know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it’s my wife and it’s my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I’m better off and dead
Because when the smack begins to flow
I really don’t care anymore
About all the jim-jim’s in this town
And all the politicians makin’ crazy sounds
And everybody puttin’ everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds

’cause when the smack begins to flow
Then I really don’t care anymore
Ah, when the heroin is in my blood
And that blood is in my head
Then thank God that I’m as good as dead
Then thank your God that I’m not aware
And thank God that I just don’t care
And I guess I just don’t know
And I guess I just don’t know

Pearl Jam - Red Mosquito

I've long said that Pearl Jam is my favorite band. There are many other bands that I listen to more often (DM(B), Zep, Guster lately), but Pearl Jam is still far and away my favorite. Everything about them makes me happy...makes me smile. (Don't it make you smiile?) Anyhow, I think ultimately this song is my favorite of theirs. When No Code came out, and everyone started ragging on them, saying they had lost their touch, it was this song that proved to me that they hadn't. No Code is a great (and greatly misunderstood) album. The ending of this song ("if i had known then") might possibly be the most gratifying 30 seconds of music I've ever heard. Seriously. (If you don't believe me, I'm sure Becky will back me up.)

I was bitten, must have been the devil
he was just paying me...
a little visit, reminding me of his presence
and letting me know, he's a'waiting, he's a'waiting...
up there...
if I had known then what I know now...

...on that note, maybe I should pay more attention to who I chose on this thing. Looking back, there's a lot of repeat customers.

Long Live Ken Jennings!

David Bowie - Where Have All The Good Times Gone

In my life I've never stopped to worry about a thing
Opened up and shouted out and never tried to see
Wondering if I'd done wrong
Will this depression last for long
Won't you tell me
Where have all the good times gone

Pearl Jam - Rearviewmirror

Saw things clearer
once you were in my
rearview mirror

I don't even know that this jives with my personal life, in regards to relationships, their ending, and whatnot. Apparently a bachelor's in CS and 10+ years of computer experience don't prevent you from being retarded. Go Mondays. In short, Guster = Good, Sorry to those who tried to tell me this previously (I believe you now!) Sorry for the lack of postings lately. It's been a "heavy" couple of weeks, and posting to a blog just didn't seem that important. But I need to look at it the way I originally set out to...as something fun to do. Even (especially?) on the days where there's no fun to be found (check out my other blog if you're unsure). The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, etc...now...some of their music is fantastic, and (especially in the case of Dylan) a lot of their music is at the very least very heartfelt. I can definitely appreciate heartfelt. For some reason or another, though, I just don't like listening to it. In Dylan's case...I'm not a big fan of his vocals. At all. I listen to it when I can, but that usually lasts no more than 3 sings in a row. Anyways, my point is, these people really do have some terrific songs/lyrics, and just because they're not my cup of tea, that doesn't mean I'm going to shun them. Case in point:

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be Heroes, just for one day

Madonna - Material Girl

Just for fun (and because Luke mentioned Madonna in a comment a few days ago)...

'cause we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues

Well I know I had it coming,
I know I can't be free
but those people keep a movin'
and that's what tortures me...

In the context of the song, the singer is in prison, and he's referring to people in a train that's going by outside. Perhaps I'll post a picture to go along with that lyric.

Hopefully you all like it. Before I actually get going, I'm going to play around with the template for a while, to get it looking how I want it.

Thanks for coming!
